BAGHDAD: The US Embassy in Baghdad is stepping up efforts for the return of hundreds of US troops to a military camp near Iran’s borders with Iraq, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej quoting a source from the Union of Muslim Ulama.
Embassy officials hold meetings with Iraqi security officials and politicians from Diyala province at the embassy every Saturday with a view to reviving “Cobra base” on the Saudi side (60km northeast of Baquba, the capital of Diyala Governorate, located some 50km to the northeast of Baghdad).
The facility was operated by US forces from 2004 to 2011, said head of the Union of Mudlim Ulama in Iraq’s Diyala province, Jabbar Al Ma’amouri.
Washington is seeking to establish a US military camp near Iran’s borders, he said, adding the US Embassy has promised to provide substantial political and financial support to political sides that help US achieve its objective.
